Instruction

Make impossible possible, the possible easy, the easy elegant.

-Moshe Feldenkrais

Naomi offers both individual and group learning  based on the Feldenkrais Method of Somatic Education, which provides experiential learning as the basis for healing and improvement of function. Through simple, gentle and relaxing movement sequences combined with awareness, we learn to move beyond self-limiting patterns to discover greater ease of movement and well-being. The emphasis is not only on immediate relief of symptoms, but also on giving clients tools to take control of their improvement and well-being independently.  This  is fundamentally a learning — rather than corrective — process, in which Naomi helps guide individuals to connect with their own deeper intelligence in finding solutions to their difficulties.

Functional Integration®

Instruction Overview - Individualized Sessions

This is the one-to-one format of Feldenkrais. This highly versatile process creates for you the opportunity to address your unique concerns in a personalized way. (Functional Integration® is often referred to as a kind of “dance” in which the sensory communication between teacher and student determines the unfolding of the lesson.) These 60-minute sessions are available both in-person and remotely.

What to Expect

After an initial interview to identify your concerns, Naomi will guide you through a series of gentle movements tailored to your unique needs and goals. Movements are done in safe, comfortable positions of lying or sitting. The process, although involving mostly passive movement and gentle non-invasive touch, engages the nervous system in a powerful way to produce positive change.

In-Person Sessions

With you sitting or lying comfortably on a padded surface, fully clothed, Naomi will use gentle, non-invasive, instructive touch and passive movement to help you to sense yourself on a deeper level. Pain and tension release, mobility increases, breathing becomes easier, and movement is experienced with a new sense of ease, lightness and wholeness, as self-limiting, unconscious movement patterns give way to healthier and more functional options.

Brief integrative movements in sitting, standing or walking are often included to reinforce and transfer improvements to “real life” activity and specific objectives.

While this may feel similar in some respects to a deeply relaxing bodywork treatment, the difference is that this process also powerfully guides you on a neurological level to adopt healthier patterns of posture and self-usage.

This approach is recommended for those with acute pain, injury or difficulty, or those wishing to explore issues in a more personalized and intensive way.

Sessions via Video-Conferencing

In these sessions, adapted from the Functional Integration® format, Naomi uses moment-to-moment verbal guidance rather than touch to provide the same level of personalized experience. While you lie comfortably on a padded floor or bed in the comfort of your home, Naomi will lead you through a series of exploratory movements and self-observations to address your particular needs. Similar to the “hands-on” format, these lessons are extremely relaxing and supportive, enabling you to process and learn at your own pace.

Home Programs

Each session will include written or recorded materials for home use designed to reinforce your learning and to provide a process for ongoing improvement. More traditional exercises or other activities may be included as appropriate to support your progress.

Recommended Frequency

A minimum of 4 sessions, weekly to bi-weekly, is encouraged in order to integrate the positive effects of this process into your daily life and goals.

Awareness Through Movement®

Group Classes

This is the group format for learning in Feldenkrais. In these 45 to 60-minute lessons, Naomi verbally guides you through a series of slow, gentle, novel movements, giving you the opportunity to explore the “how” of what you do. Movements are done mostly on a padded floor in comfortable positions of lying or sitting. As we learn to reduce effort and increase sensitivity, we provide our brain with the sensory feedback it needs to reorganize our movement for greater ease, efficiency and well-being. Each class explores a different functional theme based on developmental movement or biomechanical relationships, providing the nervous system with new opportunities for improvement.

What To Expect

Each lesson is a kind of “movement puzzle,” which you learn to “solve” by gradually including more and more of yourself in enacting your intention. Places that work too hard learn to soften, and places that aren’t normally included learn to come to the fore, creating a more ideal distribution of effort and coordination. Extraneous tensions drop away as we learn to reconnect with the inherent pleasure of moving. At the end of the lesson we may feel taller, lighter, calmer, move with greater ease and comfort as we improve our relationship with gravity; breathe easier and enjoy an increased sense of integration of mind and body.

Naomi will provide individual attention as needed throughout the class.

ATM® classes are appropriate for all levels of ability. These lessons are especially recommended for continued learning following a series of individual sessions.
